Ladakh Monastery Tour

Day 01: Fly Delhi - Leh: -

Upon arrival at Kushuk Bakula Leh airport you will be received by our office representative and transferred to hotel. Rest and acclimatize yourself to the altitude and rarefied air of Ladakh. In the evening you can explore local market of Leh on your own. Overnight at hotel in Leh.

Day 02: Leh - Half day tour (Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, Tsemo Gompa and Sankar Gompa): -

After breakfast, leave for a tour of Leh and see its ancient monuments and Buddhist sites. We will go to the Leh Palace (build during 17th century) above the place is Tsemo Gompa. From here you can see the entire Leh town. After lunch at your hotel or market we leave for a tour of the Shanti Stupa, Built by Japanese Buddhists this Peace Pagoda is a beautiful structure with gilt panels on its sides that display episodes from the life of Buddha. It was inaugurated in 1983 by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. We then drive to the Sankar Monastery that is surrounded by forests and barley fields that rise in terraces along the hillside. Within the monastery you can see beautiful Thanka paintings and statuettes of Buddha made of gold. Return to your hotel to stay overnight.

Day 03: Leh – Shey - Thiksey - Hemis – Taktok – Chamdey Monastries

After breakfast we leave for a tour of the Hemis Gompa. This monastery is the best known in Ladakh. Around the monastery you will see Chortens or Buddhist reliquaries and ornate walls. After seeing the sights of the monastery we leave for Taktok and Chamdey. On the way back to Leh we will visit Thiksey Monastery. This is situated on a mountain from where you can see panoramic views of the Indus Valley. Within the monastery you can see many beautiful Buddhist artefacts. We then leave for the Shey Palace, which was the summer palace of the royal family of Ladakh. Return to your hotel in Leh for overnight stay.

Day 04: Leh - Likir - Alchi - Lamayuru

After breakfast drive to Likir and visit Likir gompa situated atop a windy cliff top overlooking the beautiful village of Likir. It was founded in the 12th Century although the present construction dates back to the 18th century as the original one was destroyed by fire. In its courtyard is a yellow-coloured 3 storey high mammoth statue of the Lord Buddha, which was constructed by a resident monk. The top floor has an impressive museum containing old tangkhas and weapons used many centuries back.

Then drive and cross the River Indus and reach Alchi, Ladakh's most loved monastery. Over a century old, its wall paintings are very similar to those of the Tabo gompa in Spiti, Himachal Pradesh. Unlike other monasteries, which are usually on a cliff top or cling to a mountainside, Alchi is at ground level and is nestled in the shade of a garden.

After Alchi, move to visit the impressive Ridzong Gompa, reached from the road head after a 30-minute uphill walk. It’s an impressive monastery well hidden in the lap of the mountains until you’re face to face with it. It is situated on the mountainside wedged in between 2 ends of a ridge. It is about 100 years old and the name means 'mountain fort' aptly describing this isolated Gompa. It also has a nunnery of female monks.

Finally reach Lamayuru monastery, founded by Rinchen Zangpo in the 10th century. This Gompa is located amidst the massive mountains. The spectacular setting of this Gompa and its renowned collection of carpets, tangkhas, and frescoes has been attracting many people over a long time. It is believed to be the oldest in central Ladakh.

Overnight stay in Lamayuru.

Day 05: Lamayuru – Leh (124 km)

In the morning we visit the Lamayuru monastery to be part of the morning religious ceremony. It’s a very soothing and spiritual experience to be there among these warm and friendly monks. On our way back to Leh we can visit Basgo monastery famous for its statue of Buddha. Overnight stay at the hotel in Leh.

Day 06: Leh – Khardung-La – Diskit - Hunder

Drive from Leh to the Nubra Valley over the Khardung La pass (5606 Mts.), the highest road in the world. Part of the drive is over a glacier. There are great views of the Karakoram Mountains from the top. Continue drive down from the pass toward left bank of Sheyok river. Drive above Diskit Village and visit Diskit monastery situated on a the hill top. Later drive to Hunder 4 kms. further from Diskit. Check in to your camp and enjoy hot cup of tea with biscuits. In the evening drive to sand dunes at Hunder and enjoy the ride of two hump Bactrian camel. Overnight stay in camp at Hunder.

DAY 07: Hunder – Diskit – Panamik - Summur

After early morning breakfast drive to Panamik, crossing the bridge over Sheyok River and then driving along the River Nubra to Panamik. Panamik is the last village on the old Silk Route and is famous for its hot water springs. You can also take bath in this medicinal hot water. Later drive back to Summur for overnight stay in tented camp.

DAY 08: Summur – Samstangling - Leh

After breakfast drive to samstangling monastery. This monastery is newly build and looks very beautiful from out and inside. This is the branch of Rizong Gompa. Later drive back to Leh over the Khardung-La Pass. Overnight in hotel at Leh.

Day 09: Leh - Stok Palace– Stakna – Matho monasteries – Tibetan Handicraft Centre: -

After breakfast we leave for the Stok Palace, where the royal family of Ladakh used to live. In the museum at the palace you can see family heirlooms and artefacts from royal times. We then tour the Matho and Stakna Monasteries. On the way back we will visit Ladakh Handicraft Centre. Here you can buy beautiful handmade products and craft items. We than travel to Choglamsar, where you can see a Tibetan settlement. There are many Tibetans residing in Ladakh. Return to your hotel to stay overnight.

Day 10: Fly Leh - Delhi

After an early breakfast we leave for the airport, where you can board the flight to Delhi. Our representative will meet you at Delhi airport and help you check into your hotel. Check into your hotel and relax. Stay overnight at the hotel.
